Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry

I got a nice camera for my birthday last August.  And by nice, I mean "don't have to live with automatic settings".  I got frustrated with cameras that think they know when and how you want to take a picture.  There was quite a bit of luck in this shot.  I didn't know exactly how it was going to turn out, but I like it a lot.  It's a shot of an opening sequence in my daughters school play.  That's her in the middle.  The ghostly blurs behind her are from other cast members moving about the stage.  I took it without the flash (for obvious reasons) and the shutter stays open a little longer to allow enough light in.

That's really cool. That looks like a work of art, that does.

I've been looking into buying a new camera -- undecided on how far away from user-friendly I should move. To DSLR or not to DSLR, that is the question. What camera do you have? And anything you'd recommend me looking out for when choosing one?

I'm a firm believer (now) in DSLR. I have the Canon EOS 40D. I got that one vs. the Rebel XSI or XTI because the camera body is a little more robust and you can take pictures in a faster burst if you want to. It only has 10 megapixels vs. 14 in the Rebel but it hasn't been an issue for me. I use the viewfinder (rather than the livescreen) so the battery lasts forever. There are a lot of possibilities for lenses, but I went with a zoom that goes from 28mm to 135mm. Sometimes I wish it would go a little lower so I could take in more of a room, but for the most part it's pretty good. I won't talk about lens apertures because a) I'm not proficient enough, and b) you'll have to do your own research to decide what's best. Two other things to look for in the camera/lens are some kind of image stabilizer function and autofocus.
